Advent Spirituality Center

Spiritual Direction

The Advent Center is committed to nurturing the quest for a deepening life in God. Often in that quest, having a friend to hold your hand and join you as the journey unfolds is not only helpful, but essential. Sometimes that individual who walks with you through what is often called the “dark night of the soul" is already a friend who now becomes a spiritual friend.

At other times you may have such a difficult time discerning the voice of God that you choose to turn to a trusted individual who is called a “spiritual guide” or “spiritual director” to listen with, and for you, as you seek to stay connected to God. Opening yourself to include others in prayerfully listening for the still small voice of the Spirit on your behalf is at the heart of spiritual direction.

Persons identified as “spiritual directors” may or may not have theological degrees, they may or may not be on a church staff, but most certainly they are persons committed to the life of prayer. Many involved in spiritual direction have trained in various programs to help prepare for listening to and for you in the presence of God as you discern the Spirit’s movement within your life. Some have trained and are experienced in facilitating group spiritual direction — a process where the role of spiritual director is shared by each participant of the group.

In association with The Advent Center are numerous spiritual directors committed to helping individuals on the spiritual journey through individual or group spiritual direction, as well as gifted individuals who can aid groups in the discernment process — sometimes involving a “Clearness Committee,” a discernment process practiced among Quakers.

Please contact the Center to seek assistance in finding an individual spiritual director, forming a group for group spiritual direction, or using the discernment process for your church, community or organization.
